PURPOSE: A cathode active material and a lithium secondary battery employing the active material are provided, which active material is structurally stable, is improved in the structural strength, the stability and the phase stability and is reduced in the irreversible loss and the cation ordering, thereby improving the cycle lifetime and the energy density of a lithium secondary batter. CONSTITUTION: The cathode active material is represented by the formula: (Li1-xBx)NiyCozMn(O2-dFd), wherein B is Na, K or H; M is at least one selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ga, Al, Cr, Mn, Ge, Ti, V, Cu, Zn, Si, P, Nb, Ta, Zr, Sn, Sb, Pt, In, Ag, au, Bi, Pd and W; x is 0-1; y+z+n=1; n is 0-0.25; y>0; at least one between z and n is larger than 0; z/y is 0-1; and d is 0-0.2. Preferably the cathode active material is LiNi(0.75)Co(0.125)M(0.125)O2, and M is Al, Cr, Fe, Ga or Mn. |
