PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic linear actuator effective for operability and handlability as an actuator for a remote operating apparatus, which turns a switch on and off through remote control. SOLUTION: This actuator is composed of a combination of a movable element 2, having permanent magnets 3 on its left and right side surfaces, and a pair of left and right electromagnets consisting of E-shaped magnetic cores 4, 5 counterposed on both sides of the movable element interposing it between, and excitation coils 6 wound around the center legs 4a, 5a of the magnetic cores. When the distance between the permanent magnets, counterposed to the magnetic poles of the electromagnets and fitted to the movable element is represented as A, and the distance between the center magnetic pole and magnetic poles on both ends of each E-shaped magnetic core is represented as B, the distances A, B are set so that B<A<2B is satisfied. The direction of the excitation current caused to flow in the excitation coils is changed, and the movable element is caused to perform reverse movement between two operation positions.
