PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a black stripe, etc., from emerging on a rear end portion of an original copy due to a shadow resulting from the thickness of papers in an image reader having an imaging optical system fixed to imaging devices for reading an image with scanning the original copy. SOLUTION: An original copy rear end detection sensor 42 detects the rear end of an original copy 2 passing below the sensor 42 to estimate the time point at which the rear end of the copy 2 passes over a reference position in an image reading range A, based on the distance between the sensor 42 and the reading range A and the copy feed speed. Among image data read by imaging devices 34, those image data taken at the rear end of the copy 2 and within a specified range around it in the copy feeding direction are converted into image data corresponding to e.g. the paper color of the original copy 2, thereby canceling a black stripe, etc., resulting from shadows.
