The cage consists of lower (24) and upper (25) frames connected by a series of flexible cables (26) wound onto pulleys (40) driven by one or more motors (43) to allow the distance between the two frames to be varied. The cage, equipped with supporting cradles for the submersible vehicle, is lowered to the required depth by a cable (38) connected to a winch on a surface unit, and the cage frames are positioned to secure the submersible vehicle or to permit its launch or recovery.
