PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading system which is capable of obtaining a read image that can be processed through any applications even when a double-sided manuscript having a color image printed on its one side and a monochromatic image printed on its other side is read. SOLUTION: An image input means in which a read color image on the one side of a sheet and a read gray scale image on the other side of the sheet outputted from an image reader that is capable of reading images printed on each side of the sheet are inputted, a coloring means which formally converts the read gray scale image inputted in the image input means into a color image and then synthesizes it into a color formal image, and a processing means which processes the read color image and color formal image, are provided.
