A disk brake assembly (20) for a vehicle has a housing (24) a rotor disk (58) and an annular flexible bladder (96) to move a first brake shoe (64) towards the rotor disk (58) causing it to move towards a second brake shoe (80). The first brake shoe (64) is deformable and has an annular brake pad (78) attached to it using a layer of resilient material (77). An annular piston member (96) which protrudes from the first brake shoe (64) to be compressed by the bladder (96) is thermally insulated from and radially displaceable with respect to the first brake shoe (64) so that the annular piston member (98) is adapted to maintain the original radial position with respect to the annular bladder (96) regardless of radial thermal expansion of the annular rotor disk (58). Thus, local high pressures and temperatures at protruding spots on frictional surfaces of the rotor are minimised and the brake pad lifetime is made longer. Also, is avoided stresses of the bladder are reduced and premature ageing of the bladder.
|
