This invention provides LEDs or light emitting semiconductors that incorporate a colour conversion layer within the semiconductor structure. The colour conversion layer may act upon all or a portion of the light emitted from the active layer of the semiconductor to improve the chromatic index or provide a complementary colour to alter the overall colour emitted from the device. To avoid the need for conductivity of the colour conversion layer, various alternatives utilize internal reflection within the device or alternative current paths through or around the colour conversion layer.
