A gearshift apparatus (5) having a shift lever (7) is constructed so that the transmission stage can be set or changed by manual operation when the shift lever (7) is moved from a main gate (11) for an automatic transmission mode to a manual gate (13) for a manual transmission mode through a transit gate (12). The apparatus (5) comprises a detent unit (20) attached to the body of a vehicle. The unit (20) contains a moving member (21) for selection therein. The moving member (21) moves integrally with the shift lever (7) when the lever (7) moves in the transit gate (12). When the lever (7) moves in the main gate (11) or the manual gate (13), the moving member (21) never follows the motion of the lever (7). The detent unit (20) is provided with a retaining mechanism for producing a retaining force for retaining the shift lever (7) and a click feeling at either end of the transit gate (12) as the lever (7) moves along the transit gate (12). The shift lever (7) has a simple construction, although it is provided with all necessary functions for the change between the automatic and manual transmission modes.
