Glucopyranosyloxybenzylbenzene derivatives represented by the following general formula (I) which have an improved oral absorbability, exert an excellent effect of inhibiting human SGLT2 activity in vivo and, therefore, are useful as preventives or remedies for diseases caused by hyperglycemia such as diabetes, complication of diabetes and obesity wherein P represents a group constituting a prodrug; and R represents lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, lower alkoxy lower alkyl, lower alkoxy lower alkoxy or lower alkoxy lower alkylthio.
