Process for continuously electrochemically removing nitrogen comprises passing a gas containing nitrogen along an absorber body (1) wetted with a liquid alkaline electrolyte (4) and having an electrode pair (5, 6) to which an alternating voltage (U(t)) is applied. The voltage can be varied between a starting value (A) and a first threshold value (B) within the time period DELTA t2n-1 (n = 1, 2,......infinity) and between the starting value and a second threshold value (C) within the time period DELTA t2n (n = 1, 2,......infinity) connected to the time period DELTA t2n-1 (n = 1, 2,......infinity). The first threshold value is positive and the second threshold value is negative or vice versa so that the polarity of the electrodes changes to the time points tn (n = 1, 2,......infinity). An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The threshold values are different in subsequent time periods and/o in corresponding time periods, and the duration of the single time periods can be varied.
