Transition metal compounds represented by the general formula (I) are useful as catalytic components for the polymerization of olefins: (I) wherein M is a Group 4 transition metal; X is a s-bonding ligand; Y is a Lewis base; T is a group containing a s-bonding atom; E is a specific group containing an atom capable of coordinating to M by a lone pair; q is 1 or 2 satisfying the relationship: [(the valence of M) 2], r is an integer of 0 to 3; and R<1> to R<4> are each hydrogen, halogeno, a hydrocarbon group, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, a silicon-containing group, or a heteroatom -containing group.
