A controlled switching assembly (32) is connected to points along the series connection circuit of the cells (300, 302, 304). A control accumulator (or condenser) is connected to the other side of the switching assembly. By suitable switching operations, the control accumulator is connected across only one cell at a time, for energy exchange between them. By transferring energy to and/or from individual cells, via the control accumulator, voltages at the cells are closely equalized. An Independent claim is included for the associated method.
