The engine includes an outlet valve with outlet valve spring which can be driven by an outlet cam (3) through a valve drive component formed by a shift tappet (1) whose compression spring (9) has a spring force lying between the minimum and maximum outlet valve spring force. The piston (6) has a locking device through which it can be locked positively with the casing (5) in a normal operating position and in a brake operating position.
