BIODEHALOGENATING CULTURES AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

Process for forming a starter culture comprising culturing a single pure strain of a microorganism on aseptic nutritious medium, the microorganism is capable of dehalogenating a nitrogen-free organohalogen compound so as to reduce a level of the nitrogen-free organohalogen compound while leaving a nitrogen-containing cationic polymer substantially intact. There is also provided a process for scalping up a biodehalogenation process using at least one starter culture of an aseptic single pure strain of a microorganism, the microorganism being capable of dehalogenating a nitrogen-free organohalogen compound so as to reduce a level of the nitrogen-free organohalogen compound while leaving a nitrogen-containing cationic polymer substantially intact, the process comprising adding the at least one starter culture to an aqueous composition containing nitrogen-free organohalogen compound and nitrogen-containing cationic polymer under conditions to achieve a cell density of the microorganism sufficient to start a next scale up or sufficient to run the dehalogenation process. Processes of biodehalogenation are also provided, as well as products including paper products, and starter cultures.
