Flow-through apparatus contains lumps of an adsorbent/reactant comprising iron oxide and/or oxyhydroxide embedded in an iron hydroxide matrix. Independent claims are also included for: (1) water treatment units comprising the apparatus; (2) waterworks comprising the water treatment units; (3) process for producing an adsorbent/reactant, comprising: (a) mixing an aqueous ferric hydroxide suspension into an aqueous suspension of iron oxide and/or oxyhydroxide, including Fe(OH)2; and (b) either drying the suspension to form a solid and comminuting the solid or mechanically shaping the optionally predried suspension in semisolid form and drying the product to form a solid.
