PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially preferable method for producing a high- quality aromatic polycarbonate having an excellent color, slightly discoloring even at a high temperature of >=380 deg.C and having a slight reduction in molecular weight in producing an aromatic polycarbonate by a melt polycondensation method. SOLUTION: In this method for producing an aromatic polycarbonate from an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a diaryl carbonate by polymerization in a melt state, the method for producing the aromatic carbonate uses a diaryl carbonate having (a) <=200 wt.ppm water content, (b) <=1 wt.ppm aluminum content and (c) <=1 wt.ppm o,p'-bis(phenoxycarboxyl)biphenyl content is used as the diaryl carbonate.
