PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance availability of light and to be made suitable for making it compact, in a video display device to form a video by irradiating a display element with light from the side of a light source. SOLUTION: In the video display device, with which an optical image corresponding to a video signal is formed by irradiating the display element with the light from the light source side by an illuminating optical system and is enlarged and projected through a projection means, the light from the side of a light source 1 is radiated to two display elements 12a and 12b by the illuminating optical system by splitting by a polarizing beam splitter 4, after converting into a color light beam in terms of time series by an electronic color splitting means 7 by passing through a means to array a polarizing direction, and so that the optical path reaching the polarizing beam splitter from the light source is bent midway, and is crossed with the optical axis of the projecting means.
