PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming material excellent in image forming property and shelf stability and ensuring suppressed ablation and to provide an original plate for planigraphic printing plate for direct plate making using the image forming material and capable of forming an image with an IR laser. SOLUTION: The image forming material contains a phenolic resin having hydroxyl group partially modified with an organic group having IR absorbing power and can record by exposure with IR. The phenolic resin is obtained by reacting phenolic hydroxyl groups of a high molecular compound having a phenol skeleton in the principal chain or a side chain with a polymethine dye having a halogen atom on the methine chain.
