PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phenolic resin for can coatings highly excellent in both processability and run-out resistance compared to conventional ones. SOLUTION: This phenolic resin for can coatings is characterized by being obtained by the following process: a phenolic compound is reacted with an aldehyde compound in the presence of an ammonia catalyst in advance, the reaction is continued by addition of an alkali metal hydroxide catalyst followed by addition of an alcohol to alkoxylate part of the methylol groups in the presence of an acid catalyst.
