PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new side-chain radical-polymerizable compound, and to provide a liquid crystal device having sufficiently low voltage drivability and high contrast and improved in electro-optical characteristics at low temperatures. SOLUTION: This side-chain radical-polymerizable compound is shown by the general formula (I) (wherein, R1 is CH2 or CH2CH2COOCH2; R2 is an aliphatic group, alicyclic group, aromatic group or substituent thereof; R3 is an aliphatic ether group; R4 and R5 are each H or CH3; X is CH2, an ether linkage or ester linkage; Y is an ether linkage or ester linkage; n is an integer of 2-4; and p and q are each 0 or 1). The other objective liquid crystal device using the compound is also provided.
