PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save energy by reducing the blower power, while maintaining specified NOx reduction performance, in a combustor of such type that both a pilot burner and a main burner are supplied with air for combustion from a common blower. SOLUTION: This is a method of operating a combustor of such type that it is equipped with a pilot burner 10 and a main burner 11 and both the pilot burner and the main burner are supplied with air for combustion from a blower 20, and the combustor is operated in such a way as to break the supply of air to the pilot burner or to supply a controlled quantity of air to it by means of a flow regulating valve 30 arranged in a bypass line 22 for pilot air, after the main burner 10 is ignited by the flame of the pilot burner 11.
