摘要 Disclosed is a method for desulfurizing a NOx accumulating catalyst system that is arranged downstream from a lean operated internal combustion engine, whereby the condition in which the catalyst is loaded with sulfur is determined and/or the activity of the catalyst is monitored by means of on board diagnosis. When maximum load acceptance is exceeded or an irregularity occurs in the activity of said catalyst, the acceptability of desulfurization is initially verified by monitoring safety-related components to see if they are operating correctly and by monitoring the driving situation in compliance with certain driving parameters. Subsequently, the possibility of performing desulfurization is verified for compliance with the predetermined driving parameters. If desulfurization is acceptable, the required desulfurization parameters are setnd desulfurization occurs. Desulfurization is performed until a predetermined degree of desulfurization is obtained or the actual results of the acceptance test require a premature termination or interruption of said desulfurization. If this is the case, desulfurization is resumed according to the previously obtained degree of desulfurization if the acceptance criteria are present or, as in the case of a normal termination of the desulfurization process, the process is repeated by returning to step one of the above-mentioned method. The inventive method is particularly suitable for common rail diesel engines and an exhaust gas purification device for conducting said method is also described.
