PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road surface state detector capable of surely discriminating whether a road surface is in a dry state a wet state. SOLUTION: This device comprises a projector 1 for emitting a light having a prescribed polarizing characteristic to the road surface, a light receiver 2 for receiving a light having a polarizing characteristic other than the prescribed polarizing characteristic, and a detecting means for detecting the road surface state according to the intensity of the light received by the light receiver.
