PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coal gasification method and an apparatus therefor whereby the temperature control at burning and gasification steps is enabled by controlling the amount of a gasification agent supplied to the burning and gasification steps; a stable slag discharge at the burning step is achieved; the increase in the amount of generated ammonia, etc., and the worsening in gasification action due to the decrease in oven-inside temperature at the gasification step can be prevented; the efficiency in coal gasification is improved; and the amount of toxic substances such as ammonia is reduced. SOLUTION: Pulverized coal is gasified by jetting pulverized coal transported by a transport gas, together with a gasification agent, into a burning step through a burning step burner to burn the coal, introducing a high-temperature gas generated in the burning step into a gasification step, and jetting pulverized coal transported by the transport gas from a gasification step burner into the gasification step to thermally decompose the coal by the high-temperature gas. In the above process, the gasification agent is divided in a specified ratio and supplied to the burning and gasification steps.
