PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve combustion performance by reliably layering air and EGR gas in a combustion chamber. SOLUTION: An intake port 1 is split into upper and lower sections by a partition plate 11, and the inflow rate of an upper intake port 1A is reduced by a pneumatic control valve 12 so as to suppress the generation of a vertical swirl within the combustion chamber 3. The EGR gas outlet 10 of an EGR passage 8 is opened in a wall part on the lower side of a lower intake port 1B, and the EGR gas is introduced in such a manner as to lean to the lower side of the port 1B and layered in the lower part of the combustion chamber 3 apart from an ignition plug 5.
