PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent gas seal mechanism which allows a knife edge mounted in the lid of a coke oven to fit flexibly to a gap brought about against the sheet surface of the oven frame by years of heat for adhering closely to the sheet surface, and has a knife strength enough to cut off a foreign matter if it happens to be there. SOLUTION: The gas seal mechanism in the lid of a coke oven comprises: a transverse piece 4 which is positioned between 2a, 2b located at the top end of a spring-including cylinder 2 mounted around the lid body 1 and the rear 3' of a knife edge 3, has a central rear 4' for touching the extension 2a and the ditch 2b to be pressed, and has a transverse ditch 4b having projections inside at the both bottom ends for touching the rear of the knife edge to press, effecting in doubling the points for pressing the knife edge; and a knife edge formed to have a thin thickness t so that it may have an increased curvature for ensuring to adhere closely to the sheet surface.
