PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ascending/descending device equipped with an automatic stopping function of load, and having excellent safety. SOLUTION: This ascending/descending device is provided with at least one hanging member; an ascending/descending portion to which load can be connected; a fixed portion fixed to a ceiling of a structure and coupled with the ascending/descending portion through the hanging member; a driving means including a winding drum to which one end of the hanging member is connected and the direct-current motor for rotating the winding drum so as to wind up the hanging member on the winding drum, and enabling the ascending/descending portion to ascend/descend by using the hanging member; a movable member receiving the tension of the hanging member; an elastic member supporting the movable members so as to change the position of the movable member according to changes in the tension of the hanging member; and a switch stopping power supply to the motor according to changes in the position of the movable member.
