PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure satisfactory dot quality and superior original reproducibility, for suppressing stain in an automatic processing machine with a developing solution free of problems on the ecosystem and work environments, even with small replenishment amount and to obtain stable high contrast image. SOLUTION: In a method for exposing and developing a silver halide photosensitive material containing a redox compound, which releases a development inhibitor when oxidized, a nucleus forming agent and a nucleus formation accelerator in at least one silver halide emulsion layer and/or one of other hydrophilic colloidal layers on the base, a developing solution used does not substantially contain a dihydroxybenzene compound, has pH 9.0-10.5 and satisfies the requirements (1)-(4), where (1) an ascorbic acid derivative is contained as a developing agent; (2) a compound of general formula (I) is contained as an auxiliary developing agent; (3) the concentration of sulfite ions in the developing solution is <=0.1 mol/l and (4) a compound of formula (II) is contained.
