PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently read the image of a slide mount. SOLUTION: A moving original platen 36 is fed toward a recovery cartridge 32, and the image of the slide mount 17 is pre-scanned. After the finish of pre- scanning, the original platen 36 is returned and temporarily stopped on the way, and focusing is performed by a focusing means 29. After finishing focusing, the original platen 36 is returned again. After completing return of the original platen 36, the original platen 36 is fed toward the cartridge 32, and the image of the slide mount 17 is finely scanned. Since focusing is performed in the middle of arithmetic operation of a reading condition at the time of fine scanning based on pre-scanning data, the image of the slide mount 17 is read efficiently.
