PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer used for optical fiber sheath materials and controlled in the deterioration of optical transmission characteristics under high temperature and high humidity, and to provide a plastic optical fiber having excellent wet heat resistance. SOLUTION: This polymer for the optical fiber materials, comprising a copolymer comprising fluoroalkyl methacrylate units and methyl methacrylate units and having a refractive index of <=1.470, characterized in that the content of sulfur atoms chemically bonded to the copolymer is 10 to 5,000 ppm and that the content of sulfur atoms not chemically bonded to the copolymer is <=50 ppm.
