PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability and portability by directly attaching a light source unit selectively emitting normal illumination light and excitation light to an endoscope. SOLUTION: A light source unit 30 is removably attached to the eyepiece portion 14 of an endoscope 20. The light emitting element 34 of the light source unit 30 is made up of a plurality of LDs and LEDs, and normal illumination light or excitation light is selectively supplied to an incoming end 22a of a light guide member 22 inserted into the endoscope 20 by an observation mode changeover switch 32. When observing a fluorescent self-image of biological tissue S illuminated through the light guide member 22, an optical filter 40 transmitting the excitation light alone is attached to the eyepiece portion 14. When observing a color image of the biological tissue S, the optical filter 40 is removed.
