PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a packaging material excellent in gas barrier properties and adapted to the airtight packing of food, medicines, electronic parts or the like, or a gas barrier film having excellent characteristics as a gas barrier material. SOLUTION: The gas barrier film having gas barrier properties consists of a plastic film and the inorganic membrane layer provided on at least the single surface of the plastic film. When the gas barrier film is observed by a scanning electromicroscope after the inorganic membrane layer thereof is exposed to trifluoroacetic acid vapor for 15 sec, the number of recessed parts with a diameter of 5μm or more capable of being observed in a visual field of 180×240μm is 5 or less.
