PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer recorder capable of printing at a high speed, reusing a member used for transferring, and facilitating a maintenance such as a replacement or the like. SOLUTION: The recorder generates a multi-valued signal from input image data, supplies a recording agent to an endless belt-like recording agent holding medium 3a based on the image data by an ink jet head 2, heats the agent held on the medium by the head 1 according to the multi-valued signal, and transfers the agent to the medium 5 to record the medium 5. The recorder also arranges a conveying roller 3b for holding the medium 3a in a loop-like state and relatively moving the medium 3a to a recording agent supply means and the head at the inside of the holding medium. The recorder slides two rollers disposed at an intermediate part to the side of the loop when the agent holding medium is replaced.
