PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seam welding method excellent in the quality of a weld zone by which the depth of good penetration is obtained with the small quantity of deposite at tack welding in the seam welding method when manufacturing a thin wall UO steel pipe. SOLUTION: Relating to the seam welding method when manufacturing the UO steel pipe, in this seam welding method of the UO steel pipe, by beforehand grooving the root face of a groove part, through holes such that the average area in the cross section of the groove horizontal to the surface of a steel plate in the thickness direction in the groove part is 0.05-1,500 mm2, the interval between adjacent grooves is 1-500 mm are formed and also, by performing plasma welding provided that the heat gain of welding is 0.1-1.5 kJ/mm without using fillar metal, part of the groove faces is heated and molten. After that, provided that the quantity of the deposite of weld metal is 0.05-2.5 g/cm, the tack welding is performed using a consumable electrode type gas shielded arc welding and, after that, substantial seam welding is carried out.
