PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for driving a print carriage moving in the main scanning direction and a roller for feeding a recording sheet in the sub- scanning direction through main scanning drive motor. SOLUTION: A printer comprising a print carriage 11 moving in the main scanning direction and rollers 32, 34 and 42 for feeding a recording sheet in the sub-scanning direction is provided with a rotary drive mechanism of the rollers, and lock members 37, 38 and 43 for regulating rotation of the rollers. Driving force of a motor 13 for driving the print carriage in the main scanning direction is transmitted constantly to the rotary drive mechanism at the time of driving in the main scanning direction, and the lock members are disposed in the vicinity of the end in the main scanning direction such that the lock members touch the print carriage depending on the moving position thereof. The lock members are arranged to lock the roller so long as the lock members do not touch the print carriage and unlock the roller when the print carriage touches the lock members.
