PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a multi-nozzle ink jet recorder comprising means for generating a charging field and a deflecting field simultaneously from an electrode common to all nozzles that it is difficult to automatically detect and repair a failed nozzle while sustaining normal recording without recording a specific pattern. SOLUTION: The multi-nozzle ink jet recorder comprises means for detecting a failed nozzle based on the magnitude of a current flowing into a common electrode, means for updating the state register and a failure register in the multi-nozzle depending on ejection data and results from the detecting means, and means for repairing a failed nozzle when the number of failed nozzles in any one failure register becomes 1.
