Print cover (3) is attached to printer base (5) by hinges (10,12) and ribbon mechanism (30) is rotatably affixed to cover. When cover is opened, ribbon mechanism folds out of cover due to its mass and folds back into cover when cover is closed. In fully extended ribbon carriage (30) position, it is easy to replace ink ribbon and media. Carriage is connected to cover by linkage having slit for movement of ribbon carriage. Print cover (3) is raised and ribbon mechanism, rotatably affixed to cover, folds out of cover due to its mass. It folds back into cover when cover is closed. Ribbon carriage has drive mechanism for ribbon wind-up core. Thermal printhead (58) is flexibly coupled to ribbon carriage and is automatically arranged against print roller (18) by alignment tabs (24,26). To service print head, ribbon carriage is manually folded into cover. Independent claims for ribbon mechanism coupled to printer cover, device to ease insertion of ribbon in printer, device to ease maintenance of print head, means to create access to printhead, device to automatically engage printer cover.
