PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a DC free encoding method and device which satisfy run- length restraining conditions and harmonizes DC component suppression and an encoding rate. SOLUTION: A DC free encoder 1 has a FIFO memory 2, a look-up head DC controls section 3 and an encoder mapping section 4. The FIFO memory 2 is inputted with the data words to be currently encoded and the data words to be encoded thereafter and outputs the data words in the order of inputting. The look-up head DC controls section 3 forms the redundancy bit data word S3 which is finest for the data words to be currently encoded satisfying the run-length restraining conditions by referencing the plural data words outputted from the FIFO memory 2 and the reference redundancy bit data words. The encoder mapping section 4 encodes the data word S1 to be currently encoded by using the formed finest redundancy bit data word S3 and forms a modulation signal MD.
