PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing unit and its method that can perform 4-point interpolation processing for a video signal of an HD(High Definition) format and perform 16-point interpolation processing for a video signal of an SD(Standard Definition) format. SOLUTION: Images of EVEN fields (consisting of pixels marked○in Figure 47 (A)) and images of ODD fields (consisting of pixels marked square in Figure 47 (A)) for the video signal of the SD format are synthesized and converted into frame images of 480×720 pixels as shown in Figure 47 (A), using the pixels marked○and the pixels marked square interpolates pixels (pixels markedΔshown in Figure 47 (B)) placed between the pixels marked○and the pixels marked square to convert the frame image into a frame image of 960×720 pixels, and the frame image is read four times by 4 pixels each to conduct 16-point interpolation processing.
