PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continue the engine control even when an abnormality is generated in one of two signal systems for discriminating cylinders. SOLUTION: A cylinder is discriminated by a first discriminating part 51 according to the number of cam angle sensor signals between crank angle sensor signals, a cylinder group is discriminated by a second discriminating part 52 based on the change of the interval between crank angle sensor signals, and the cylinder is discriminated by a third discriminating part 53 based on the change of the interval between cam angle sensor signals. An abnormality of the cam angle sensor system is detected by a cam angle sensor abnormality detecting part 54 based on the number of input of crank angle sensor signals between cam angle sensor signals, and an abnormality of the crank angle sensor system is detected by a crank angle sensor abnormality detecting part 55 based on the number of input of cam angle sensor signals between crank angle sensor signals. When both systems are normal, the result of discrimination of the first discriminating part 51 is selected by a discrimination result selecting part 56, and when an abnormality is detected in either system, the result of discrimination of the second discriminating part 52 or that of the third discriminating part 53 is selected for executing the fail-safe control.
