PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion method for an internal combustion engine allowing a low NOx and smoke-less operation while suppressing a combustion pressure rising rate. SOLUTION: Fuel is injected, in pulse configuration, in a combustion chamber 5 formed including a reciprocating piston, each injected fuel lump is mixed with air to form an independent lean premixed air/fuel mixture, and each lean premixed air/fuel mixture is continuously ignited and burned independently. Unlike a conventional lean spray combustion where the lean premixed air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber is ignited and burned at once, each injected fuel lump injected in pulse configuration is continuously ignited and burned independently. As a result, the combustion pressure rising rate can be suppressed and, since the premixed lean air/fuel mixture of fuel and air is formed before ignition, a combustion temperature is lowered, the amount of NOx generated can be reduced, and the exhaustion of smoke can also be suppressed.
