PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion compensated optical fiber having a large effective core cross-sectional area and low loss. SOLUTION: The dispersion compensated optical fiber has the following properties. The core 4 of the optical fiber consists of a center core part 1 (with radius (a) and relative refractive index differenceΔ1), intermediate part 2 (with radius b and relative refractive index differenceΔ2) and ring core part 3 (with radius c and relative refractive index differenceΔ3), in which (a) ranges from 2 to 3μm,Δ1 from 0.9 to 1.5%,Δ2 from -0.3 to -0.45%,Δ3 from 0.2 to 1.2%, b/a from 2.0 to 3.5, and c/a from 3.0 to 5.0. The fiber has >=20μm2 effective core cross-sectional area, <=40 dB/m bend loss and -65 to -45 ps/nm/km wavelength dispersion in the use wavelength region selected from 1.53μm to 1.63μm. The fiber has the cut-off wavelength which enables substantial single-mode propagation, and the dispersion slope compensation rate is 80 to 120% when the fiber is compensated to produce zero wavelength dispersion in the single- mode optical fiber.
