PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and compact picture read device capable of sufficiently securing the stable transfer of an original sheet whose surface and back face should be read. SOLUTION: This device is provided with first and second image sensors 9 and 28 for respectively reading the surface and back faces of an original sheet, first and second platens 6 and 7 for supporting the respective faces of the original sheet, and a backup guide for guiding the original sheet to the first platen side. In this case, the respective carriage faces of the platens for supporting the original sheet are constituted of the same continuous plane. Then, guiding means 39b-39d for setting the height of a carriage path on the first plane higher than the carriage path on the second platen, and for regulating and gradually reducing the height of the carriage path of the original sheet are arranged at the upper part of the carriage path.
