PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect picture lacking and to shift a video area so as to eliminate the picture lacking. SOLUTION: This image display device has a memory means 22 for temporarily storing an input video signal, a memory controlling means 20 for controlling a read start address with respect to the memory means, a displaying means 26 to which a video signal read by the memory means is supplied, a detecting means 32 for detecting an aspect ratio to the input video signal, and an address control signal generating means 30 which an aspect ratio detection output is supplied to from the detecting means and generates a read start address control signal for the memory medium with the input video signal. When the input video signal of an aspect ratio that is different from the aspect ratio of the video screen display of the displaying means is supplied, the read start address is controlled on the basis of the address control signal generated by the address control signal generating means. Thus, an image area is automatically shifted and picture lacking at the time when an object is a person is prevented without changing the aspect ratio of the input video signal. |
