PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently read a transmissive original and a reflecting original with high optical resolution in a flat bed type image scanner and a sheet feeding type image scanner. SOLUTION: An original reader and a light source are moved with respect to the reflecting original or the transmissive original. The light from the original is condensed to a lens 1, and photodetected by a linear array CCD 1. The light from the original (between B and C) is condensed by a lens 2, and photodetected by a linear array CCD 2. In order to obtain accurate image information without lack and duplicate per one line so as to use two linear array CCDs per one line, a terminal end of the cells of the CCD 1 for capturing the image of the original and a starting end of the cells of next linear array CCD 2 are controlled so that image information does not lack and not duplicate. Since the CCDs 1 and 2 for the one line of the original apparently operate similarly to a single CCD, the accurate image information without lack and duplicate for the original can be obtained.
