The invention concerns a bistable or metastable nematic display device comprising two parallel plates (10, 12) provided with electrodes at their inner surfaces and containing a liquid crystal material (20). The invention is characterised in that it further comprises means defining an anchor for molecules on each plate, the anchoring means being adapted to define in the cell, a plane parallel to the plates wherein, in one of the states, the liquid crystal is oriented parallel to the plates, the molecules being inclined relative to the plates outside said plane, and means designed to apply by control an electric field not less than the fusion field of the nematic order in said plane, for which the distribution of the molecules oriented perpendicularly to the plane is at least substantially identical to the distribution of the molecules oriented parallel to the plates, such that the device shift from a transitory fusion state of the nematic order, to reach, under field, a state wherein the nematic director is generally perpendicular to the plates.
