BUFFER MANAGEMENT METHOD FOR SUPPORTING QOS GUARANTEES AND DATA FLOW CONTROL METHOD IN DATA SWITCHING

PURPOSE: A buffer management method for supporting QoS(Quality of Service) guarantees and a data flow control method in data switching are provided to reduce PDU(Protocol Data Unit) discard instances at a data network node by discriminating PDUs associated with well-behaved data flows among PDUs associated with misbehaving data flows prior to queuing. CONSTITUTION: A PDU is received via an input data port of a data network node(202). A PDU received in a reserved temporary memory storage portion of a shared memory buffer is temporarily stored(204,206). Header information is extracted from the stored PDU(208). The PDU is selectively queued for processing(210). The PDU is switched. The PDU is transmitted via an output data port of the data network node. Resources used by the transmitted PDU are deallocated. The storage of the received PDU in the temporary memory storage portion prior to header inspection is provided for qualified determination to be made when discarding PDUs.
