An open-pore monolithic ceramic foam material is used as a substrate material for a catalytic converter. The material is produced by impregnating an open-pored polymer foam with slurry and an allowing it to dry in air. The green ceramic is then heat-treated at up to 2000 deg C, allowing all organic substances and volatile gases to escape. Preferred Features: The inorganic slurry constituents undergo chemical reaction with each other forming one or more new phases. The monolithic foam is a composite ceramic containing corundum and mullite in both phases. Alternatively, the monolithic foam is a composite ceramic containing the crystalline phases of cordierite and enstatite. Alternatively the monolithic foam is a composite containing three crystalline phases of cordierite, enstatite and olivine.
