A wire electric discharge machine in which the direction of the movement of a wire electrode (1) is changed by a lower roller (8) below a workpiece (6), the wire electrode is pinched by a capstan roller (12) and a pinch roller (13) and drawn, machining electric power is supplied between the wire electrode and the workpiece while moving the wire electrode, and the workpiece is machined by discharge energy. In such a machine, the capstan roller and the pinch roller are so arranged that the direction change angle theta of the wire electrode by the capstan roller and the pinch roller 0 DEG < theta < 90 DEG up from the direction of the movement of the wire electrode changed by the lower roller. Thus, breakage of the wire electrode can be suppressed, the machine is suitable for automatic feeding of the wire electrode, the working fluid can be prevented from entering a wire cutting machine when the wire cutting machine is used, and housing of a used wire electrode (1a) can be improved when the wire cutting machine is not used.
