PURPOSE: An apparatus for managing an IP address in a switching system and a method thereof are provided to prevent an exhaustion of an IP address and an idle IP address of an internet access system having a little access amount from generating. CONSTITUTION: A call processor(32) confirms a call access try of a subscriber terminal and judges whether the call is a call which needs an IP address. The call processor(32) searches an idle IP address and allots a corresponding IP address to perform a call process when an IP address allotment is required. A number translator(33) translates a terminating signal from the subscriber terminal. A plurality of internet access systems(34-1 to 34-n) requests an IP address allotment to the call processor(32) and returns the IP address under a control of the call processor(32) when an accessed call is canceled. A database(31) is coupled with the call processor(32) and the internet access systems(34-1 to 34-n), receives an allotment or return of the idle IP address under a control of the call processor(32).
